Hey, guys - Does anyone have any experience and feedback about the Hero3+ Silver Edition? I have the opportunity to pick one up for basically free, but, I just want to make sure it's a good camera - and what it's shortcomings might be. Primary uses would probably be mostly auto-X type stuff...
Thank you in advance!

I have one, and I love it. Performance is excellent for what it's designed to do. The biggest area it struggles in is low-light performance. Particularly on the high frame rates, or even using it to capture still images, it can look pretty blurry and grainy, but as long you're outside in the day time it shouldn't be an issue. I've used mine with the suction cup attachment on a few cars and it's worked extremely well. Very solid mount, smooth video.
The Silver edition doesn't have the pro tune features that the black edition does, and you can't film 4k or 1080p 120 fps, but honestly those won't be huge limitations if you're just doing amateur stuff. Definitely do go any lower than the 3+ silver edition. You'll want the 1080p 60fps and the 720p 120fps is super cool for slowmo stuff. If you can pick one up cheap, I'd say go for it over the new ones. That will leave you money to get more of the accessories (which add up fast), and the new ones don't seem to offer too much additional functionality.

If you give me an email address I can send you some examples of stuff I've done with mine with minimal filming/editing experience, as well as some advice on accessories and the like if you care.

E. - that would be awesome. send to drpcvt@gmail.com...and, yeah, definitely amateur...lol, and unlikely to do much night time/low light stuff anyway. Thank you for the information!

No problem! I'll send you some raw video files so you can see what the output looks like, and then a link to some videos I've made. One thing I forgot to mention is that the microphone is just so-so. You should have them in a little bit.

I sent you an email with some links to edited youtube videos. I'm currently uploading the raw footage (it's about 900mb) to a file transfer service, but my internet upload speed is shit so it's going to take awhile.

Thanks - youtube vids look great - I'll dl the raw footage when I get to my computer at home (hooray for working on weekends!) but, that seems like it would be good enough for what I'm looking for and the price is definitely right. lol. It's possible to set up an external mic on these if I chose to, right?

yep. You have to get an adapter but it's not too much trouble. I know jay hawk jake told me he uses one in his videos, so you could check those out as well.
